Once he’s all washed and put into clean pyjamas, we lay in bed. “How are you feeling, sweetheart?” I ask him. He seems to give it a good amount of consideration before answering me. “Are the bad people trying to get you?” he whispers.

My heart breaks, and I have to pull back tears. This is what I didn’t want to happen; I didn’t want him to know any of this too soon; he’s only five, for fuck’s sake. I am glad that he thinks it’s me they’re trying to get, not him.

“There are bad people in the world, and some don’t like that I’m a Sea witch. They’re scared, so they act out, but I’m not going anywhere. I will protect you forever and from anyone. The good thing about being a sea witch is that it makes me really strong and nothing can happen to me. I will chase the bad people away.”

He holds me tight, sitting up. “I’ll protect you as well, Mummy. I won’t let the bad people win,” he says fiercely, making my heart pull more.

“What did you see when we left the old house?” I ask, dreading the answer.

“I saw the bad people try to get you, and then you sent them all away with water. And then your friend showed up saying we had to go through the swirly circle.” I feel immediate relief that he didn’t see Walter dying, “You sure that’s all? You can tell me if you saw anything else, you won’t be in trouble.”

He shakes his head fast, “I didn’t see anything else, promise.” He holds up his pinky to give a pinky swear, and that makes me feel better. He never gives those if he’s telling a fib. Linking mine through his, I hold him to my chest and sing him a lullaby.

When he falls asleep, I whisper a simple spell over him, one I learnt from my grimoire to make sure he has a peaceful sleep. Tucking him in, I grab some cotton shorts and a tank top before heading for a shower.

Letting the tears that were building up from talking to Noah flow freely, the water washes them away. Getting out after a good hour, I forgot how much of a pain in the ass my long hair was. I go to get out the hairdryer from underneath the sink before remembering my full powers have been released.

Closing my eyes, I concentrate on having dry hair, peeking through looking at the mirror; my hair is dry. Squealing, I do a little happy dance. No more blow drying, yes! It’s still wild, waves and big curls mixing together. I’m glad I memorised most of that book they let Alaura send me now. Especially since I had to leave it and the rest of our stuff behind. With my full powers, I don’t even need to say the spell out loud anymore.

Seeing myself back to normal is weird. I spent so long getting used to the new look, but I don’t think I realised how much I missed the real me.
